Kansas City’s Curbside Bulky Item Collection: Everything You Need to Know

Disposing of large household items just got easier with Kansas City’s Curbside Bulky Item Collection Program. If you’ve got furniture, appliances, or other oversized items that can’t go in your regular trash pickup, this no-charge service is the solution. Here’s an updated guide on what’s accepted, what isn’t, and how to participate.

What the Bulky Item Collection Program Accepts

The program is designed to handle large household items that are unsuitable for regular trash collection, including:

  • Refrigerators, Freezers, and Air Conditioning Units

    • Must be completely empty of food and debris, cleaned of mold, and free of health risks.

    • Items containing fluorocarbon refrigerants (Freon) require special handling and must be indicated when scheduling the appointment.

  • Metal Appliances

    • Examples include stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, and furnaces.

  • Furniture

    • Couches, tables, chairs, TVs, beds, mattresses, and metal furniture are accepted.

  • Miscellaneous Items

    • Bathroom fixtures, cabinets, rugs, garage doors, lawn mowers, railroad ties, disassembled swing sets, and metal fencing.

  • Storm Windows and Glass Panes

    • Prevent shattering by placing an “X” of masking tape across glass panes and stacking them separately.

  • Carpet

    • Must be rolled up and either longer than four feet or over 40 pounds. Small pieces can be disposed of in regular trash collection.

What the Program Does Not Accept

To ensure efficient service, the program does not accept the following items:

  • Bagged or boxed trash (dispose of these in weekly trash collection).

  • Commercial or business trash or materials.

  • Piles of small items, bags, or boxes.

  • Loose or scattered materials, including items in dumpster bags.

  • Closed drums or fuel tanks (metal drums must have both ends removed to be collected).

  • Automobile bodies or gas tanks.

  • Loose building materials or lumber (these must follow specific bag-and-bundle guidelines for regular trash collection).

  • Damaged recycle bins or trash cans/carts (check recycling options; otherwise, dispose of them as regular trash in a bag).

How to Schedule a Pickup

If your items meet the guidelines, scheduling an appointment is quick and easy:

  1. Online: Use the Online Bulky Scheduler.

  2. Phone: Call 311 or (816) 513-1313.

Important Notes:

  • Appointments must be scheduled at least 48 hours before your regular trash collection day.

  • A maximum of 15 items can be scheduled per appointment.

  • Items must meet all guidelines for acceptance.

To cancel or reschedule, call 311 or 816-513-BULK (2855). For cancellations within 96 hours (4 days) of your appointment, call 816-513-BULK directly.

Make It Count: Think Before You Toss

Before scheduling a bulky pickup, consider whether your items could be donated or reused. Many donation centers will accept gently used items and may even pick them up for free. Visit RecycleSpot.org for a list of options to keep usable items out of landfills.
